First Moon
Ceremony

Menarche · honouring your daughter’s first moon

A red full moon in watercolour, framed by green raspberry and nettle plants.

This ceremony is a gift you can offer your daughter when her first moon comes. We sit in a circle with her grandmothers, parents, friends, siblings, or anyone she wants beside her. Together we honour her first menstrual blood in ceremony and celebrate this moment with her. In ancestral tradition, we celebrate menarche in community, so she knows she has a community to lean on as she enters this new stage.

Each guest brings a meaningful gift and tells her the story behind it: why they chose it and what they wish for her. Together with her parents, I prepare a pouch with traditional herbs, soft cotton and meaningful objects to accompany her through her moon cycle and help her relate to it with care, listening and tenderness.

We talk with your daughter about what her first moon means to her. The women she invites can share what their mothers and grandmothers taught them, and what they wish they’d known at her age. I share ancestral ways of understanding and honouring menstrual blood, and we offer her tools to find that wisdom and confidence within herself.

My hope is that your daughter comes away knowing who she can turn to. Feeling at ease with her blood can be a beginning: a way to grow in confidence, feel at home in her body and her sexuality, and trust her own wisdom.

Write to me if you’d like to offer this ceremony to your daughter.
